An important and complicated question. I have nothing to contribute but a funny little anecdote.
My favourite ex-girlfriend (yes, there's a ranking) told me the following story.
At about the ages 16-18, she tried quite a few drugs, and quite frequently. One day, she visited her family doctor, who knew her quite well.
"So, what is your problem?", he said.
"Well, I see, like, flashes. Like, behind my eyes."
He looked at her: "You see, like, flashes?"
"Yeah."
"Like, behind your eyes?"
"Yeah."
He looked down and cleared his throat: "What do you want me to do now? Give you some tests? FOR CHRISSAKES, CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE!"
And she did. The flashes soon disappeared.
