It goes like this:
Either you really want to quit or you don't.
It is no doubt too simple in the sense that it doesn't explain nearly all of the variance and I hasten to add that it is based on nothing but anecdotal evidence, of which I have seen more than I'd like to have. But the more I see, the more true it seems, and I'm fairly certain it explains a substantial portion of the variance. To the extent it's true, this means that you shouldn't get your hopes up too much once you've managed to talk your spouse or brother into going into rehab.
